What You Should Know About Postpartum Bleeding (Lochia)

Abnormal Postpartum Bleeding (Lochia)

After giving birth, it’s normal to experience vaginal bleeding and discharge called lochia. This is your body’s way of shedding the blood and tissue that lined your uterus during pregnancy. While postpartum bleeding is expected, it’s important to understand the difference between normal lochia and abnormal postpartum bleeding.

What is Normal Postpartum Bleeding?

Typically, postpartum bleeding lasts for about 4 to 6 weeks. It usually starts off heavy and bright red for the first few days. Then it gradually become lighter in flow and changes to pink, brown, and eventually a yellowish-white color.

During this time, you might pass small clots (no larger than a golf ball), especially in the first week. You may also notice bleeding increases slightly after physical activity or breastfeeding due to uterine contractions.

Signs of Abnormal Postpartum Bleeding?

While some bleeding is expected, it’s crucial to watch for signs of abnormal postpartum bleeding. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you notice that you have soaked through a pad in less than an hour, for two consecutive hours.

Bleeding that remains bright red and heavy beyond the first week is also abnormal lochia. In addition, look for sudden increase in bleeding after it has slowed or if you are dizzy, weak or feel faint. Abnormal postpartum bleeding can be a sign of postpartum hemorrhage or infection, which require prompt medical attention.

Managing Postpartum Bleeding

To safely manage postpartum bleeding, use heavy-duty maternity pads, but avoid tampons until your doctor approves. Rest as much as possible, and avoid strenuous activity. Monitor the color, amount, and odor of your bleeding. And it’s crucial to call your doctor if you have concerns about your bleeding pattern.

Conclusion on Bleeding After Giving Birth

In short, trust your instincts. If you experience symptoms of abnormal postpartum bleeding, contact your healthcare provider immediately. Early intervention can prevent serious complications.
