Uterine Ablation Frequently Asked Questions

Uterine ablation, medically known as endometrial ablation, is a treatment that reduces and destroys your uterus lining. This is a minimally invasive procedure, and it’s generally performed as an outpatient treatment.

In addition to heavy bleeding disrupting your day, it also contributes to anemia and fatigue. As a result, your overall health and wellness can negatively be impacted.

The uterine ablation treatment takes only a few minutes and is usually performed with a local anesthetic. Similar to a Pap smear or pelvic exam, during your procedure, you recline on a treatment table. Your doctor begins by inserting a speculum to hold your vagina open to access your cervix for insertion of the ablation device.

Once the device is in place, your doctor turns on the radiofrequency energy, which heats and damages your endometrial lining. After the treatment is complete, your doctor turns the radiofrequency energy off and removes the device from your cervix.

Uterine ablation is suitable for women who are sure they don’t want to have any more children. Although our ablation procedure is not a sterilization treatment, it can cause dangerous pregnancy complications or interfere with your fertility.

Some women experience mild vomiting and/or nausea, mild pain, or some cramping immediately after the NovaSure procedure. Within a day or so, most women feel normal and resume regular activities. However, you should follow your doctor’s instructions, regardless how good you’re feeling.

It’s normal to have a watery and/or bloody discharge following the procedure, which could start immediately after the procedure. Or even a couple of weeks afterward. Additionally, the discharge may last for a short amount of time, or opt to a few months, and may come and go. There’s no cause for concern as this is expected and normal with any uterine ablation procedure.
