Fetal Monitoring Questions & Answers

or low -risk pregnancy, intermittent fetal monitoring is done, even if you and your baby have no known health problems and the pregnancy has gone well. However, for a high risk pregnancy, our doctors advise fetal monitoring throughout labor for our pregnant moms in San Antonio.

Fetal monitoring can be done in two ways. It can be done directly on the baby while inside your uterus (internal monitoring). Or it can be done on the outside of your belly (external monitoring).
  • Internal monitoring. A small wire (electrode) is put on your baby’s head while he or she is inside your uterus.
  • External monitoring. This may be done with a special tool called a fetoscope. It can also be done using Doppler; an electronic tool that uses sound waves and a computer.

Using a handheld Doppler device to listen to the fetal heartbeat is the most basic type of fetal monitoring. This is often done during prenatal visits to count the fetal heart rate.

Fetal monitoring may also help show problems in the baby during late pregnancy and labor. It can show if other testing or a C-section may be needed.

You do not need any special care after external fetal monitoring. You may return to your normal diet and activity unless your doctor tells you otherwise.

After internal fetal monitoring, your doctor will check your baby’s scalp for infection, bruising, or a cut. He or she will clean the site with an antiseptic. Based on your situation, you may also be give other instructions.
